Learn To Write For Children: Should You Do A Writing Course?

Category: business writingadmin @ 7:04 pm

You have never needed a writing course to pen intelligent, interesting stories that capture the imagination with bold creativity and unexpected twists. You know the difference between “there” and “their,” and understand that “they’re” is something else entirely. Your grammar is impeccable, and you know enough about the rules to know when to break them. That is, you have all these things on your side until you attempt writing children’s books. The best thing you can do for your children’s writing career is learn to write for this specific genre of writing!

There are many very successful authors who have written lots of books for adults in a variety of genres who find themselves stumbling when it comes to writing children’s books. They have well honed writing skills that they never needed a writing course to gain and they sit down to apply those skills to writing books children will love. Yet, the story never seems quite right. Or, they send it out repeatedly and get nothing more than immediate rejection. Some editors ignore them altogether, not even humoring them with a reply.

How To Improve Your Lousy Writing Skills In The Workplace

Category: business writingadmin @ 7:04 pm

If there’s one important reason why you need to write effectively in the workplace, it is this: the quality of your writing imprints a lasting impression on the reader. This reader may be your boss, a client, or a person who is ready to make a billion dollar business deal with you.

Have you ever read a poorly-written document that made you lose interest right away? It was so poorly-written that you lost trust in the author and asked yourself why the author was wasting your time? How about those junk e-mails that sneak into your junk box like annoying cockroaches? You know the ones I’m referring to: the ones pitching vitamins, software, and sex aids. These e-mails are the biggest showcase of writing blunders, stricken to death with grammar mistakes, misspellings, and sloppy sentences. I doubt these e-mails pull a sale because their poor writing style immediately alienates the reader.

The Truth About The Writing Life

Category: business writingadmin @ 6:54 pm

When you are a writer, you cannot separate your writing from your life. Writers cannot not write, so writing for you is like breathing. It is so natural you don’t even think about it. I think it’s a shame that so many writers treat their writing as anything from “special time” to the last thing on their to-do list. Writing is life. And so the principles of life, or the truth about life, are also the principles of, or the truth about, the writing life.

I recently re-read a favorite spiritual book, and in it I found a quote from the author’s high school drama teacher. This drama teacher must have been a wise man because he always taught his drama students the following:

In this article, we’ll discover how you can make every writing minute count, so you can write whatever you want to write. You may well be surprised that you have much more time than you think you do.

So let’s assume that out of your busy life, you can carve 20 minutes a day for your writing. During those 20 minutes, you won’t browse news or shopping sites, or read your email: you’ll write.

The Gospel of Writing According to Marilyn: Chapters 1 – 2

Category: business writingadmin @ 7:08 pm

Chapter 1: Expect to Write, and Write, and Write Some More…

The first advice I give my authors is the most simple, and quite often the most difficult. And that is, to expect to write. And I mean write. You can’t just talk or read about it. The more you write, the freer you become. Nothing I say here or in my coaching, classes, and writing programs works unless you write. And write. And write.

Believe it or not, I have clients who come to me expecting to write perfectly within days of our starting to work together. I’ve been writing for over 25 years and just in the past few years have I even considered calling myself a master at the craft. Expect to writea lot. And to rewrite, then write some more. I call it diving for pearls. Some days you will write 10 pages and come up with one pearl worth keeping. Other days you’ll write two pages and every word is perfect.

Look closely at the layers of paint that make up some of the great works of master painters. Those layers cover up creative attempts that didn’t work. And this is sometimes… Read More

The Six Writing Hats

Category: business writingadmin @ 6:54 pm

It’s summertime in Australia and summertime in Australia means one thing – cricket! And if there ever was a “mental” sport, it’s cricket. I was watching a test match last week and one of Australia’s greatest ever players, and captains, passed the comment that once you get to state level cricket (the step beneath playing for the national team) the game is played almost entirely in the mind. That is, a player’s success or failure depends less on his physical talent with the bat or ball, than on their mental strength, attitude and aptitude for the highest level of the game.

This is not the first time I have heard this. I have heard it said that all sport played at the highest level is more than 90% a mental game. This means that what goes on inside the competitor’s head largely determines their success or failure.

Over the years I have studied the great storytellers, in an attempt to ascertain what sets them apart from others and sees their books sell in the millions, while tens of thousands of manuscripts never see the light of day. After hearing Ian Chappell’s comments on the cricket, I asked myself the question:… Read More

Business Writing, Effective Custom Business Writing

Category: business writingadmin @ 7:04 pm

Normally, business writing is entirely different from an academic writing in a significant manner. When you are writing an essay, you normally lay out your base then continue to explain on your thesis- Then you allowing that essay to grow up and expand as you take your reader, gradually, by thinking yourself or through your thinking process, your journey. Business writing is generally not like this, that’s why early said business writing different from any other writing.

For example, if you are writing business plan, or about a business decision, you do not describe all the details of the growth and success of your business to reach that decision. You can provide the reader a report as your wish, and give a total view of the plan. Explain the things in the right way when they get confused. Narrate with a good example. Writing a business proposal is not such kind of easy essay writing. It has some ethics of writing. Effective business writing can be success.

Business writing ethics, you must follow the ethics then you can create a great effective business letter. This is briefer and be conscious… Read More

Write Nonfiction in November

Category: business writingadmin @ 7:17 pm

November hosts the end of Daylight Savings Time, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving, but if youre a fiction writer this month hosts an even more important and exciting event. November marks the annual start of National Novel Writing Month, affectionately called NaNoWriMo. I am proud to say that in 2005, I was one of many winners of this 30-day contest. Winning simply requires that you turn in (and have counted) a 50,000-word (175-page) novel by midnight on November 30. The novel doesn’t have to be any good. In fact, the contest is all about quantity not quality, the idea being that you should shut your inner critic away in a closet in your mind for 30 days and simply write something — anything. The goal simply revolves around starting and to finishing a novel.

I bet you are wondering what happened to that novel of mine, right? Well, I pitched it to several agents at the San Francisco Writers Conference in 2005 and had them all interested, but they all turned it down. I even won the fiction pitch contest with my 25-word description of the book, and my prize lunch with two agents later landed me literary representation but… Read More

How Specialization Can Jump-start your Writing Career

Category: business writingadmin @ 6:55 pm

If you are already working as a writer, even if you’re not supporting yourself in that field yet, you’ve probably heard the argument of specialist versus generalist. In simple terms, a specialist is a writer who focuses on a narrow area of expertise. In other words, he or she specializes in a certain subject. The generalist, on the other hand, takes a more expansive view of things and writes on whatever subjects come along.

If your goal is to be a professional writer now or in the near future or even just to make some part-time money as a writer, you need to decide where you intend on finding work and how you’ll get it. Are you going to look everywhere and accept just about anything of interest? Then you’re a generalist. Or are you going to narrow your sites and concentrate on certain topics? That’s a specialist.

You can decide to generalize or specialize based on your personality, your whim, or the circumstances, but it is sounder business (and writing is a business) to make a conscious choice.

So which is the better choice? The answer may surprise you.

On the surface, it would appear… Read More
